Most ocular surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis with your pet being admitted to the hospital in the morning and being discharged later the same day. Surgical patients undergoing general anesthesia are monitored in two ways. First, a veterinary nurse is with your pet continuously from beginning of anesthesia to recovery. Second, computerized equipment carefully monitors the following parameters: blood pressure, heart rate, EKG, pulse, respiration, temperature, end-tidal CO2, and oxygen level. Intravenous (IV) catheters are placed and IV fluids are used during all general anesthetic procedures. This allows quick access to the circulatory system in case of an unforeseen emergency. The fluids help provide support to the circulatory system and prevent dehydration, as well as aid in a quicker recovery from anesthesia.
Our hospital strongly believes in compassionate, quality, veterinary ophthalmic care for our patients. As a result, all surgery patients will receive pain management before and after surgery, and during surgery if necessary. Additionally, pain medication may be prescribed to be given at home. We hope this pain management program will reduce any discomfort experienced and aid in a quicker recovery after surgery.
